The decision is complete when there is no one left to convince.

not even yourself

I watched a video today about Werner Herzog's famous penguin.

The one that broke away from the colony and headed straight toward the mountains, 70 kilometers away toward certain death. When researchers brought it back, it simply turned around and started walking again.

I first encountered the film 10 years ago, but it wasn't until today that it awakened a deeper recognition in me.

In the same video, I encountered a Japanese concept: Mokosatsu .

— To kill with silence.

Herzog asked, "But why?"

He gave no answer. Because there is nothing we can know about the penguin's motivation. The penguin is not depressed. Not brave. Not existential. The penguin walks. That is all.

But when I saw it — the penguin, the word, the silence — I recognized something from my own journey.

Annette walks her path, and Morrigan the cat follows curiously.
Annette walks her path, and Morrigan the cat follows curiously.

I had been in a loop.

Trying to convince myself of my decision to walk my own path.. Even though it didn't support me financially. And realized that it COULDN'T support me — because I WASN'T CONVINCED.

The paradox kept itself alive.

As long as I was arguing with myself, the decision wasn't fully present within me. And the field can only carry you if it EXISTS within you.

Herzog said it like this:

"If you are still explaining yourself — you are still seeking permission, and that means the decision is not yet complete inside you."

If I'm still arguing with myself — the decision is not complete.

The decision is complete inside when there is no one left to convince — not even yourself.

Mokosatsu

The penguin does not explain its journey. Herzog does not explain the penguin. The decision is complete.

The penguin walks.
